Kit unsubscribes now sync correctly

People who unsubscribed in Kit were still counted as active subscribers. This is fixed, and we are correcting past data. Your active subscriber count may go down.

What was wrong

If you use Kit, unsubscribes were not making it into BestSubscribers. When someone left your list in Kit, they stayed marked as "active" here. The same happened to people whose email bounced or who marked you as spam.

The reason: Kit's notifications do not say which event happened. They only send the subscriber's details. So every notification looked like a new signup to us, including the ones that meant "this person left".

What changed

  • Unsubscribes now apply. When someone leaves your list in Kit, they are marked as unsubscribed here within a minute.
  • Only active people are added. Someone who is cancelled, bounced or still waiting to confirm their email in Kit is no longer added as a subscriber.
  • Kit exports are filtered. When you import a Kit export file, rows that are not active are skipped, and the import summary tells you how many.
  • Past data is being corrected. Over the next few days we will check your Kit account for everyone who is cancelled, bounced or complained, and mark them as unsubscribed here.

No action is needed on your side. The fix applies to your existing Kit connection automatically.

What to expect

  1. Your active subscriber count on Subscribers will go down, sometimes by a lot. That is the correct number.
  2. Your revenue and sales attribution do not change. A sale stays linked to the content that brought that person in, even if they unsubscribed later.
  3. Your churn chart will not show these past unsubscribes, because Kit does not tell us when each person left. Only unsubscribes from now on show up there.
  4. Going forward, your numbers here will match what you see in Kit.

This applies to all users connected to Kit.
